Tips for a cleaner beach:

  1. Don’t throw anything away on the beach or in the water. Period. Birds and marine animals can become tangled in or die swallowing waste materials.
  2. Don’t drive on the beach beaches are fragile. In addition, use only proper beach access points – don’t ever walk through or play in the dunes.
  3. When you’re finished at the beach for the day, don’t just clean up your own mess, take a few minutes to walk down the beach to pick up trash left behind by careless beach goers.
  4. If you take your animals to the beach – pick up after them!
  5. Recycle the containers you use at the beach.
  6. Report overflowing beach stationed garbage cans to lifeguards or city/beach personnel.
  7. If you’re a smoker, bring a small container for your butts or put them back in the pack.
  8. Organize a group of friends for a cleanup. It’s a great way to make a difference and you’ll have fun too!
  9. Be conscious about the items you take to the beach or on a boat. Take out what you bring in.
  10. When boating, Surfing or swimming in the water – be sure to take a moment to stop and pick up floating debris.
  11. Never leave fishing line or hooks on the beach. Fishing line can strangle animals and become entangled in reefs. Hooks can injure animals and humans alike.
  12. Remember that storm water drains flow straight to our waterways. Don’t throw litter into street gutters because it might end up in the ocean or on the beach. You should never used storm water drains for dumping paint, oil, chemicals, or trash.
  13. Create less garbage to begin with. Don’t buy products that are over packaged – and be sure to decline any unnecessary “carry bags” from stores where you purchase items.
  14. Tell you friends and family, encourage them to get involved.
  15. Tell others you see littering about the dangers to our beaches and ecosystem from their behavior. Be sure to be polite, and non-threatening, yet absolute in your approach.
  16. Join a local group or organization committed to cleaner beaches.
  17. Sponsor an “adopt-a-beach” program.
  18. Be sure the only footprint you leave behind is your imprint in the sand!
